Marco Stella, Dramatic Baritone, is a Swede of Italian descent. He was educated at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix and at the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg. His Scarpia was hailed by the press as “fiery,” bringing “humanity to the role, which results in a combination of both weakness and raw power – a true portrayal of Scarpia.” Other reviews imbue his performance with “incredible stage presence,” calling his voice “magnificent,” and “a dark, sonorous baritone.”
During the 2019/20 season, Mr. Stella looks forward to making his debut as Amonasro in Vigevano, Italy, and covering Scarpia at Gothenburg, Opera, a company with which he has a long and successful association. Further performances this year include Opera Galas in Gothenburg, returning to concerts and Masterclasses in Riva del Garda, the Summer Opera Festival in Värmland, numerous oratorios, as well as the Fauré and Brahms Requiems. Over the past few seasons, Marco has delighted audiences, in concerts, oratorios and as the Phantom, in Phantom of the Opera. For the past three seasons, beginning in 2018, Marco has continued his collaboration singing in performances with Sweden’s “cake Queen” and judge of the hit series “Bake up Sweden,” Birgitta Rasmusson, on Viva la torta – a festive presentation of Italian pastries and music.
In 2007 he made his debut at The Royal Swedish Opera in Stockholm, as Angelotti in Tosca, conducted by Christian Badea, a role he revised at Austin Opera, conducted by Richard Buckley, and at Opera på Skäret. Marco Stella has also been heard at the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe, Staatstheater Oldenburg and Teatro Puccini in Merano, making his debut in 2009 at the Finnish National Opera, Helsinki, as Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte. That season he returned to the Royal Swedish Opera as Dr. Bartolo conducted by Pier Giorgio Morandi. In 2010 he was soloist at the Opera Festival Gala at Miskolc, Hungary as well at the Bergen Festival in a production of Anne Pedersdotter. Beginning in 2011 Marco began his long standing relationship as soloist with the Gothenburg Opera, including roles such as the Chief of Police in Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (directed by Graham Vick), Pietro in Simon Boccanegra, conducted by Giancarlo Andretta, Ping in Turandot, the Speaker in The Magic Flute, Belcore in L ́Elisir D ́Amore, Lieutenant Ratcliffe in Billy Budd, and Scarpia. Recently, he returned to Gothenburg to perform the lead role in Phantom of the Opera and sing in the Twelfth Night Concert and Ball. One of his first appearances with the Gothenburg Opera was as cover as the Count in Mozart ́s Le Nozze di Figaro and the Father in Humperdinck ́s Hänsel and Gretel.
Shortly after graduation, for the three seasons 2002 through 2005, Mr. Stella was a member of the ensemble at Theater Lübeck in Germany. There he performed the Father in Hänsel und Gretel, Dr. Bartolo, the title role in Gianni Schicchi, Zuniga, Truffaldino, and both Angelotti and the Sacristan in Tosca. He has also graced the stages in Wermland Opera, sang a contemporary opera in Vadstena, and toured as Dr. Bartolo in Italy, Croatia, Slovenia and Germany. His performance of The Monk in Duke Magnus and the Mermaid conducted by Niklas Wilén was recorded by Naxos. Mr. Stella also performed with the Auckland Symphony as Melot in a concert version of Tristan und Isolde.
In the US, Mr. Stella has been heard as Rigoletto at Cleveland Opera Theater and Angelotti with Austin Opera.
